Are you shocked to hear that Idaho was the top destination for movers in 2020? According to the 2020 National Migration Study conducted by United Van Lines, more residents moved to Idaho rather than moved out of of the Gem State. In fact, out of all Idaho movers, 70% of those moves were inbound.

It is also no surprise that Boise was ranked among the top metropolitan areas that people are moving to. The study found that 75% of movers settled in the city in 2020.

The top 10 inbound states of 2020 were:

  1. Idaho
  2. South Carolina
  3. Oregon
  4. South Dakota
  5. Arizona
  6. North Carolina
  7. Tennessee
  8. Alabama
  9. Florida
  10. Arkansas

More than 55% of inbound moves were done in Idaho and Arizona, according to the study. However it appears that a lot of people are choosing to move to southern states. They're leaving the bustling city life behind as New York (67%), Illinois (67%), Connecticut (63%) and California (59%) were among the states that experienced the largest rate of residents moving out.

While the study also found that the COVID-19 pandemic did influence people's decisions to move, it's believable that this was becoming the trend before then. More people these days are being drawn to the living life more in nature and less in the city. There are plenty of reasons why household would want to do so. I mean look around us, who wouldn't want to live here?

I was personally one of these inbound statistics to move to Idaho this year. Coming from the flatlands of the Midwest, the beauty of life in Idaho has been a real treat! It looks like the rest of the country is catching on as well.
