Traveling to eastern Idaho or norther Utah over the next couple days? The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for higher elevations in South Eastern Idaho. The storm could potentially dump significant amounts of snow over much of Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada and Eastern Idaho.

Initially the weather service said the storm would drop up to four inches of snow on East Idaho’s higher elevations

But that forecast has changed and a winter weather advisory was issued…now the storm is expected to bring up to 11 inches of snow in many of East Idaho’s mountains through early Saturday morning.

The mountains surrounding Pocatello received up to 5 inches of snow through Thursday afternoon

The weather service advised Eastern Idahoans to “be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility. As always, use caution while driving.”

Anyone out camping or venturing into East Idaho’s back country should be prepared for snowy and cold conditions. It’s kind of a good news bad news story for hunters. It will ideally make it easier to find the game that is being hunted, but it’s going to be cold, snowy, miserable and potentially dangerous for someone unprepared for the storm. Not exactly the ideal hunting conditions.

The central Idaho mountains including the cities of Challis, Stanley, Ketchum, Hailey and Mackay are also under a winter weather advisory calling for up to 11 inches of snow through Friday afternoon.

No other weather warnings are in effect in Idaho, but multiple warnings have been declared in Utah, Nevada, Wyoming and Montana because of the storm.

We aren’t the only place receiving snow. Nearly all of Wyoming is under hazardous weather alerts calling for significant amounts of mountain snow through the weekend and probably into next week.

Northern California and Nevada mountains in between Reno and Sacramento could see up to 24 inches of snow this weekend. Hard to believe today (9/22) is just the first day of Fall. If this is any indication this winter might be a load of fun.
