Dear Mike and Nicole,

My husband and I just discovered that our eight year old son has been stealing. We caught him stealing candy last weekend and once we got home, we found candy, toys, and games in his room that he has taken sometime over the past few weeks.

When we caught him stealing around Thanksgiving time, we grounded him, explained that shoplifting is wrong, and made him take back the things that he stole and apologize to the store owners or managers. Now that he is still choosing to do it, my husband wants to take our son to the police station so cops can make a fake arrest and teach him a lesson, hoping it will scare him into never doing it again.

I think that's way too extreme. It's not like he robbed a bank, but I also don't know what else to do. Has anyone else dealt with a stubborn child like this that can give us some good advice?
