Winter and driving do not go together especially if you have to travel over mountain passes. You've got to feel for truckers who've been stranded since Tuesday when the ODT closed I-84 due to hazardous driving conditions.

The storm system we've seen over the past few days was even worse for South Eastern Oregon than it was here in the Treasure Valley. The road between Ontario and Pendelton has already been closed more than a dozen times this winter, but this is the worst so far as the freeway has been closed in both directions since Tuesday evening and it remains closed as of today (1-19) And it doesn't look as if it will be open any time soon.

This is the reasons for the road closure according to the ODT website:

"Ice, snow, high winds (80 mph gusts), blowing snow with near zero visibility and freezing rain are creating treacherous road conditions.

" Travelers are advised to stay home or in a safe location and not try to drive. Several crashes have occurred, trailers have been blown over into ditches, roofing is being blown off of some buildings and other flying debris is creating additional hazards. Downed trees and down power-lines can be expected as this high wind event moves through the area today."
