Can We Start an Idaho Support Group for People Who Hate Loud Mouth Noises?
Have you ever felt a little crazy? Like you couldn't tell why no one else was bothered by their loud mouth noises and chewing as you are? You aren't crazy, and you aren't alone.
Misophonia is the condition that causes many of us (arguably) otherwise normal people to be affected by the sound of chewing, slurping, or other "normal" mouth noises. It can take all of our attention, call back back memories, and make it difficult to function.
This condition has been considered by those who deal with it to be a disorder, but the medical community hasn't necessarily agreed. Recently, that has seemed to be evolving as more doctors and researchers have said they see evidence in those who suffer from it. In recent studies, self-identified suffers who were tested have shown changes in brain activity from those who do not have the condition when exposed to the trigger sounds.
I admit it's a strange sounding reality, but for me, I can lose track of what a person is saying to me if the mouth noise is continual. In a car, on a road trip, if the mouth noises start, it can be uncomfortable to the point of feeling like I just need to pull over and get out of the car.
Do you deal with this? Do you know someone who does? Should we start a support group?
