Treasure Valley Teens Develop App to Stop Texting and Driving

We all know that we shouldn't text and drive, but sometimes the temptation can be just too much in our crazy busy lives. A group of kids right here in the Treasure Valley are attempting to reward us through an app that controls our urge to text and drive.

It's called Clutch and the app rewards you for not picking up your phone and texting while driving. Every time you leave your phone alone while you are behind the wheel you accumulate points that you can redeem for discounts and coupons at local restaurants and stores.

According to an article on kititv.com, Treasure Valley teens surveyed more than 150 parents in the area and 60% admitted to texting and driving.

The Clutch app works when the driver gets in the car and turns the app on. A sensor recognizes when the car is going over 15 mph and if you don't use your phone you rack up points.

Huge props to these teenagers trying to make a difference in the world and influencing us adults to do better.

This month they headed to Washington D.C. for a national transportation conference and they are currently working with the Idaho Transportation Department to get the app off the ground.

We'll have to wait a bit to see if the app comes to fruition, but I think it's an awesome idea and we're cheering these kids on all the way!
