Veterans Day vs. Memorial Day: do Idahoans know the difference?
Veterans are near and dear to many an Idahoan's heart, and Veterans Day is just around the corner.
Military holidays are a time to pause and express appreciation for the courageous men and women who have selflessly served our nation. "All gave some, some gave all" is a well-known quote often attributed to Howard William Osterkamp, a courageous Korean War veteran. The phrase, synonymous with Memorial Day, pays tribute to our servicemen and women who were wounded, lost their lives, or remain Missing in Action.
Contrary to common belief, it isn't associated with Veterans Day at all. More often than not, however, the distinction between these two holidays remains overlooked by many civilians.
Veterans Day & Memorial Celebrate Have Different Meanings
Most Veterans are too humble to say it outloud, but It's important to distinguish Memorial Day from Veterans Day.
💛 Memorial Day
Memorial Day, commemorated on May 29, pays homage to the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation's freedoms. These heroes answered the call of duty and never returned.
💙 Veterans Day
Veterans Day, celebrated on November 11, holds a unique significance all its own.
It's a federal holiday dedicated to honoring all Veterans across the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. These service members, whether during times of peace or conflict, have served our country. In contrast to Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all service members who have served in American the military.
The next time you can't remember the difference between the two holidays, think to yourself, "Memorial Day memorializes Veterans declared K.I.A. or M.I.A.," while "Veterans Day celebrates all Veterans, departed or living."
