One of the most popular vegetables is being recalled for pretty serious reasons. So much so, the FDA says the consequences can be fatal if you disregard their warning.

FDA Upgrades Broccoli Recall To Highest Threat Level, 'Class I'

Broccoli is one of the most popular vegetables because it can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Whether it's broccoli soup on a cold day or as a steamed side with your favorite cut of steak, there are plenty of reasons to grab a bag of "broc" while you're at the store.

Last December, the FDA announced the recall of broccoli "due to the possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes."

According to the FDA, the contaminated broccoli is "12oz bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets sold at Walmart stores identified by having a UPC code 6 81131 32884 5 on back of bag, with Best if Used by Date Dec 10, 2024, and Lot Code: BFFG327A6 on front of bag. All potentially affected products are past their expiration date and no longer for sale."

The recall has since been upgraded to "Class I", the highest threat level according to a recent report from Fox Business because it is now a "situation in which there is a reasonable probability that use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."

If The Broccoli Isn't In Stores Anymore, Why Does It Still Matter?

As the FDA has openly acknowledged, consumers could still have the broccoli stored in their fridge or even frozen to use for later. This means people can still experience those "adverse health consequences or death" despite the product not being in stores.

Walmart & Trader Joe's Recalled Items

This recall affected products made at BrucePac's plant in Durant, Oklahoma, and has reached several popular stores like Walmart and Trader Joe's. So, if you've got any of these products at home, it's time to play it safe. The recall includes 75 types of meat and chicken products, including grilled chicken breast strips, produced between June 19 and October 8, 2024. The best-by dates range from June 19, 2025, to October 8, 2025. If you spot these items in your fridge or freezer, it's best to throw them out right away.
