Why You Might Not Need To File Your Idaho Taxes This Year
What's that saying? There are only two guarantees in life: death and taxes. Well, as it turns out, that isn't completely true. That might be good news if you are stressed about this year's tax season.

If you are working on filing your 2024 Idaho Tax Return, there's a chance, albeit a slight chance, that you are one of the few Idahoans that doesn't need to file a return this year. It all depends on your residency status, income level, and where your money comes from.
Who DOESN'T Need to File A 2024 Idaho Tax Return?
- If your gross income falls below a specific number, you're exempt, and you won't need to file a return. For example, if you're a married couple filing jointly, you don't need to file if your gross income is below $29,200. If one spouse is 65 or older, that threshold becomes $30,750.
- If you live outside of Idaho but your income comes from the Gem State, you only need to file your 2024 return if your Idaho-based income is more than $2,500.
- Let's say that you moved to Idaho at some point in 2024. You only need to count the income earned as an Idaho resident. If that income is below $2,500, you may not need to file a return.
It's important to note that this is general information, and you need to check with a tax expert regarding your individual situation, as everyone's tax situation is unique.
Why would you want to file your 2024 Idaho Tax Return anyway?
Just because you aren't required to file, you still may want to. The Idaho Grocery Credit, meant to help offset sales tax paid on groceries, is typically $120 per person. However, the only way to claim it is to file an Idaho tax return.
What options do you have to file your 2024 Idaho Tax Return?
If you decide to file, Idaho has a free e-filing option for most people. IRS Direct and Free File are programs that make the process cost-free if your annual gross income is less than $84,000.
