Legal Or Illegal To Leave Your Car Running In Idaho
I think we're all guilty of this at one time or another. In a different world leaving your car running while you wrap up your last few chores so it'll be a nice warm, comfy, cozy ride into work was standard practice. Unfortunately in today's world, leaving your car running while unattended usually leads to theft, joyriding, accidents, and sometimes injuries.
With that said. What is the law? We know that authorities frown on us leaving our vehicles running while unattended but is it illegal? Can I actually get into some trouble for doing so?
Idaho Code 49-602No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition, effectively setting the parking brake and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway.
This leaves an exception rule. If you have the automatic startup on your keys, your vehicle remains locked and is in the proper place to where it is not a danger to anyone, you can legally start your vehicle and allow it to warm up while unattended.
