Idaho’s Covid-19 Spike Causing Blood Donor Shortage
If you are looking for a way to help the community, one of the easiest and most helpful ways to do so is to donate blood. I remember being so bummed in high school that I was not of age (18 years old) to donate blood because A) it got you out of class B) you got free snacks and tickets to cool events afterward C) you're potentially saving lives, which is a cool thing to do and boast about. So once I turned 18 I donated blood regularly.
The pandemic being in full swing does not negate blood donations still being very important for health care. But at this point it has created a shortage in donors. Hospitals have been declared as operating at crisis standards of care statewide now because of a drastic spike in Covid-19 cases. Some hospitals are even to the point of using spaces for morgue overflow. Awful, right? So positive Covid tests and fear of catching Covid is creating low donor turnout and the American Red Cross is in a panic.
If you have tested negative for Covid-19 and its variants, and/or are vaccinated, and you're feeling healthy, the Red Cross is urging you to make an appointment to donate blood at any one of their various locations across the Treasure Valley. You might not get to skip school, but you are still helping mankind and you do get some yummy snacks, which is incentive enough if you ask me. You can click here to find a blood drive near you.
