Flying a Flag This Weekend? Here’s the Proper Way to Do It.
We'll see lots of American flags on display this Memorial Day Weekend, and there are right ways and wrong ways to do it.

My dad is a US Navy veteran and member of the American Legion chapter in Nebraska where he lives, and he's a very patriotic guy. We always had a flag flying at home on holidays as I was growing up, and my dad just knew the right way to do it. But I didn't. So I Googled, and here's what I found.

Can I fly the flag in inclement weather?
You can fly the flag if it's raining, as long as it's made of some sort of all-weather material like nylon.

You can still display it on a wall or a window.

Can I fly my flag at night?
Flags can be flown at night as long as there is a spotlight on them. They have to be properly lit.

What happens if my flag touches the ground?
Flags aren't supposed to touch the ground, but if it does and it gets dirty, it can be washed or dry-cleaned.

What if my flag is old, damaged and needs to be retired?
If the flag is old and tattered it has to be properly disposed off, and not just tossed. The local VFW post can help.
