Using a cell phone, hand-held GPS, gaming device, camera, tablet or anything electronic could soon become illegal in Meridian.

The city is considering whether or not to pass an ordinance that would ban the use of hand-held cell phones and electronic devices while operating a vehicle.

You can voice your opinion at a public hearing tonight at Meridian City Hall.

So what would be legal? According to an article on idahonews.com, if this passed into law you would have to use blue-tooth, hands-free, or voice-operated mode. The only way you would be exempt from the law is if you are reporting an emergency or if you are part of law enforcement.

Keep in mind that this ordinance would still apply to when you are stopped at traffic signals. The only time you could pick up your phone or any electronic device is when your car is parked.

If you are interested in weighing in on this issue, the meeting starts at 6 o'clock tonight at 33 E. Broadway Avenue.

What are your thoughts? I think it would make for a tough adjustment, but obviously safer roads.
