Let’s Talk Turkey (or Other Food)…Leftovers. How Long is Too Long?
Having just celebrated the most wonderful holiday of the year, Thanksgiving, you've probably faced the same issue I have: How long can you safely eat your amazing food?
We "might" have over-cooked at our house, so we had extra turkey, prime rib, and incredible sides, and though I recognize that calories don't count over the Thanksgiving Weekend (and at accordingly), but I did realize I've heard so many different opinions on how long our leftovers are safe, I don't know what the real answer is.
I do know this for sure, you have to get the food in the fridge quickly (and it should be covered or placed in a container. If you aren't going to eat immediately, you can freeze and thaw when you get ready.
Beyond those rules, here are some general recommendations:
- Food needs to be covered or placed in a container and immediately placed in the fridge
- Most foods are safe for 2-3 days
- Frozen foods shouldn't be saved for more than 3-4 months
Does that fit your rules? I've found some things (like steak) don't end up being good leftovers most of the time, but the prime rib this year seemed to work well.
