It's not something anyone ever likely plans on until it happens to them: dealing with a loved one or relative going to prison. It can happen to anyone and adjusting to life with a loved one behind bars can be difficult.

Planning visitations

It's difficult to imagine what it's like to plan on visiting someone behind bars; we imagine there are so many feelings and emotions running through someone's mind beforehand.

This person planning a visit may even want to make the person behind bars feel a little more comfortable by bringing in something to make life in prison a little more tolerable. While it's a sweet gesture, there are some rules when it comes to bringing items in for an inmate.

Some of these items could be considered contraband.

The penalty for bringing in contraband

According to Idaho law, "No person including a prisoner, except as authorized by law or with permission of the facility head, shall knowingly introduce, or attempt to introduce, contraband into a correctional facility or the grounds of a correctional facility."

If you're caught bringing in anything that the law deems contraband, you could be facing some serious consequences including winding up behind bars yourself!

According to Idaho legislation:

Any person including a prisoner who violates any provision of subsection (1) of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction thereof shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail for a period not exceeding one (1) year or by a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by both such imprisonment and fine.

Oh, the irony! Can you imagine bringing in a little something for the inmate you're seeing and getting busted for it? The next thing you know, you're roommates or rather, cell mates with this person.

Now, you might be asking - which items could be classified as contraband? We're glad you asked... let's look at what you cannot bring into prison when visiting an inmate.
