Idaho Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty for Chad Daybell
UPDATED: According to the Idaho Press and KTVB, Idaho prosecutors officially filed the court documents today and are seeking the death penalty for only Chad Daybell at this time. He and his wife, Lori Vallow Daybell are each charged with conspiracy, murder and grand theft. The two are connected in the killings of Lori's two youngest children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan as well as Chads ex wife, Tammy Daybell. Prosecutors specified that the three murders were "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel, manifesting exceptional depravity." They also sighted that the couple are likely to continue to be a threat to society if they are allowed to live.
The children's bodies were found on Chad's property in Idaho in black trash bags after the couple lied for months about the kids whereabouts. There are more deaths around the couple, including Lori's ex husband, Charles Vallow. Lori's brother Alex Cox claimed he shot Charles in self defense but then even Alex died shortly after. The whole thing points to Lori and more wrong doing. Prosecutors are laying out the clear pattern of death that follows the couple and their lack of remorse.
"The State will seek the death penalty against Chad Guy Daybell in the event of the Defendant's conviction for any of the three counts of First Degree Murder and/or any of the counts of Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder as charged in the Indictment," court documents said.
Lori was sent to an Idaho mental health facility and the couple apparently believed that they were freeing the children's souls by killing them. According to testimony she thought that both her children had been inhabited by evil spirits and were "zombies." The couple made money on the killings. From Chad's ex wife their was life insurance money and Social Security survivor benefits from the two children.
Death penalty cases are infrequent but not rare in Idaho. There are currently seven men and one woman on Idaho's death row.
