Idaho Prepares for Hispanic Heritage Month
Arriba! Abajo! Al Centro! Y a dentro! It's time to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month here in the great State of Idaho!
Just a few weeks ago in downtown Boise, just a skip from the steps of our beautiful capitol building, Latino Fest 2019 was held. It was a weekend-long, massive celebration of food, culture, and all things Latino here in the Treasure Valley! A member of this community myself, I've always been appreciative of how welcoming our area is of various cultures-- those of Hispanic roots, included!
My grandma reminds me often of what Idaho was like in the 1950's. She moved here from Texas in 1953 because she and several friends who worked in fields down south heard of a vast amount of work to be had up here. At the time, they were terrified by how much machinery had taken work from them in the onion fields. My, how far things have come since then. Of course, there are a ton of great stories from migrants here in Idaho--including that of the Honorable Sergio Gutierrez, Idaho's FIRST Latino judge who went on to serve the Supreme Court of Idaho, years after migrating as a child with his parents from Mexico. More on him, HERE.
The kick off to this month celebrating Hispanic Heritage is tomorrow morning, Tuesday, September 17th at 11:00 a.m. inside the Idaho State Capitol! The event which is open to the public will include music, media awards, a celebration of culture, and a reading of the Governor's proclamation for the State of Idaho!
