Halloween Accidents & Uh-Ohs!

Until it happens to our kids, and sometimes even ourselves, we rarely think about the risks associated with Halloween's best-loved traditions. But even when we take the proper precautions, there's still a chance we'll end up trick-or-treating at Saint Al's urgent care or an emergency room.

In Oct. 2022, Genesis Health System sorted through national data on Halloween statistics to provide safety recommendations for some of the holiday's most popular traditions.

Cuts & Bruises & Broken Bones? Oh, My!

According to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission, GHS found an average of 3,200 Halloween-related injuries put people in the E.R. every year. Um, can you say, "yikes?" We hadn't a clue.

  • 55% are related to pumpkin carving
  • 25% are due to falls while working with decorations, tripping on costumes and walking while trick or treating
  • 20% are miscellaneous situations like lacerations, ingestions, and other injuries related to costumes, pumpkins, decorations, allergic reactions and rashes.

Of the individuals who sustained injuries, 10% were bitties aged six-and-under, 46% were teens ages 13 to 17, and 54% were adults.

Safer Trick-or-Treating Made Simple

The whole point of the GHS study was to provide parents with safety recommendations on all things spooky.

So, what are they?

Given the broad scope of popular Halloween activities, GHS subdivided their safety recommendations into three categories: pumpkin carving, costumes/accessories/apparel, and decorations. We then took the liberty of breaking down their suggestions into an easy-to-scroll gallery below!
