HAWAIIANS in idaho

According to Population U, there are 803 Hawaiians, 280 Guamanians/Chamorro, and 242 Samoans who reside in the state Idaho as of 2022. While the data clearly indicates Hawaiian and Pacific Islander representation is lacking in the Gem State, recent trends suggest that's changing.

HAWAII'S population decline

A recent study conducted by the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii says it's no mystery as to why people are leaving the island paradise in droves.

Over the last four years, increased regulations, unethical zoning laws, high taxes, and a spike in the overall cost of living has forced Hawaiian Natives from their home.

Over the past four years, Hawaii’s population has declined by more than 22,000 people, equaling the the third-fastest population decline per capita in the entire nation.

Additional reasons for leaving Hawaii are increased opportunities for career advancement and "the ability to make it on the mainland." Like all Americans, Hawaiians want a better future for themselves and their families.

FRIENDS who become family

Like most transplants, friends become the family you choose when you're building a life and a home in a new place.

Since moving to Star, Idaho eight years ago, my Idaho family has grown far bigger than I could've imagined. Included in that wonderful clan are our dear friends who moved to the Treasure Valley from Hawaii.

Hawaiian Natives and Idaho living enthusiasts, the manner in which our friends have welcomed us into their beautiful culture has changed our hearts and lives forever.

But since our paths crossed, I've also learned of the ignorance they've encountered on their journey to putt down roots in Idaho. Though they never complain, I thought it would be useful to share some of what I've learned about their awkward and borderline uncomfortable encounters in the Treasure Valley.
