Sure it's not good for you, but it's our right as Americans to oversalt our food. Or so we thought.

If you pay close attention, you may notice your favorite restaurant quietly removed a salt shaker from your table. It's starting to happen all over the country, including right here in the Treasure Valley. Do restaurants not trust us with salt shakers? Is it a crackdown on our health? What gives?

Yahoo seems to have a few inklings as to why salt is disappearing from restaurant tables:

  • The salt served at restaurants is usually low quality and does more harm than good when flavoring food
  • Chefs don't like the idea of not being in control of how their food is seasoned
  • With tablets, fliers, and menus, there's just not enough room on tables anymore
  • They're ugly. Have you ever seen a good looking salt shaker at a restaurant?

Does this mean you won't be able to dump all the salt you want on your favorite Idaho dish? Possibly. But as any woman with a purse knows, literally anything can be smuggled anywhere if you're brave enough.
