When You Do This, We Know You’re New in Town
Welcome to Idaho, friend! The wonders of Gem State living will become second nature to you and yours before you know it. If your goal is to settle in and familiarize yourself with local culture as quickly as possible, consider us your Boise River cruise director. Let's get local!
You can be as bearded as Grisly Adams and richer than a Simplot, but if you do this, we'll know in an instant that you're the new transplant in town.
Is that such a bad thing? In the grand scheme of things, we don't suppose so. But for some folks, attention for the wrong reasons or attention of any kind, for that matter, can be embarrassing. And that's where we come in to lend a helping hand. Why? For starters, in telling you, we're breaking with unspoken local convention, but we've accepted it.
It's not something most people readily acknowledge, let alone admit to, but it's become commonplace for Treasure Valley transplants to hide their non-native status. We've encountered a surprising number of cherries who go to great lengths to conceal the recentness of their start in the 208 state. In more ways than one, we understand. Actually, almost anyone who isn't native to the Gem State gets it. No one appreciates being singled out for their otherness. No one looks forward to a barrage of probing questions regarding their reasons for relocating here. And yet, it happens quite often.
While we wish we could protect you from the unfriendlies, sadly we can't. What we can do, however, is get you started on the right foot by helping you correctly pronounce the names of these Idaho words and names. Get 'em wrong and you're basically a walking billboard for the transplant movement. Nail 'em with confidence, and you'll be on your way to living your best Idaho life.
