23 Things Banned From Washington Trash Cans
We gave up on sorting and separating trash a long time ago.
That's right. We admit it. Judge us all you want, friend. We know exactly how we landed on Mother Earth's $h*t list. Up until a few days ago, we were cool with it.
Then our go-green-or-go-home fifth-grader called us out. She basically/accurately acknowledged the hypocrisy of us, Mom and Dad, nagging her, the oppressed daughter, for her ignoring her responsibilities while shirking several of our own.
Sorting trash isn't a waste of time.
Pardon the corny garbage pun, but our girl's not wrong. She's actually spot-on. When toxic waste ends up in regular trash cans, it can cause some serious damage. Even though it's headed for a landfill, it can still leak into the soil and contaminate the groundwater.
Not gonna lie, hearing our 11-year-old explain how our laziness poisoned the water table was kind of a low point for us, y'all 😳
Sorting trash isn't a waste of time.
Is it inconvenient at times? Yes. Is it one more thing to add to our never-ending to-do list? Also, yes. But honestly, our kid's not-so-subtle reminder was a wakeup call. It's time for us to stop being lazy pieces of **trash.**
Don't get us wrong. Separating our nasty/toxic trash from the less-nasty/non-toxic trash will never not be annoying. But we have to admit that keeping our little corner of the world tidy gives us the warm and fuzzies. So does our awesome daughter.
Think twice before you toss it.
Next time you're cleaning out the garage or finishing up a DIY project, take a moment to be better people than we've been these last few years.
