Now what?!  Organizers of the petition that wanted to move Halloween to the last Saturday of October seem to have given up.  Halloween will stay on the 31st, but there is a new effort in the works to create a second day to trick-or-treat.

The original petition had been gaining steam since it launched in 2018, and if had gone all the way to the end, it would have moved Halloween from October 31 to the last Saturday in October every year.  The idea was to keep kids off the streets on a school night and give Halloween party hosts the chance to go all out on a Saturday night instead of hosting party people on a much calmer Tuesday or Wednesday.

People went nuts about it on both sides, and now organizers of that petition seem to have changed their tune.  And they've set a new goal.

The Change.org petition now says this:

"We’ve listened to ALL of your feedback since the petition started in 2018 and view this as an opportunity to truly honor what Halloween is – a celebration of self-expression and unity. While we still believe an end-of-October Saturday observance will promote safety and increase the fun, this year we will be launching a national initiative designed to enhance the Halloween that we all know and love.

Instead of changing the date that American’s celebrate Halloween, we will be adding an additional day of festivities in partnership with Party City and other brands. National Trick or Treat Day will take place annually on the last Saturday of October so families across the country can participate in community parades, throw neighborhood parties and opt for daytime Trick or Treating.

We will launch the #ALLoween campaign designed to support the all-day celebration of National Trick or Treat Day AND the time-honored traditions of Halloween on October 31st.

With your support, we will create a safer, longer, bigger celebration for ALL by making National Trick or Treat Day official!"

So, now we have to take the kids out to trick-or-treat twice?

If everyone gets wind of this new plan, the doorbell will be ringing and the dogs will be barking and we'll be expected to have dishes of candy at the ready on two different days at the end of October.  Or, we have to remember to be a scrooge and shut the porch light off on two different nights.  Whatever the case may be.

Is this second holiday a good idea?  We'd love to know your thoughts.
