Spreading disappointing news isn't our jam, but sometimes, there's just no getting around it. Brace yourself, because it's quite possible one of your favorite childhood past times is illegal in Idaho.
We're not talking about your average teenage mischief—sneaking into a cemetery at night with your pals to search for Bloody Mary, toilet-papering a house, sniping your high school rivals with a paintball gun from high-ground advantage in a tree—you'd expect those things to be a major no-no.
If you grew up in a pro-picnic kind of family with a yen for granola and The 700 Club, you probably did this with your parents in meadows on multiple occasions that may or may not have resulted in dozens of awkward Polaroids.
It's a crime in the 208 state to pick certain flowers.
You read that correctly. By law, Idaho protects 15 types of wildflowers by law. Plucking any one of them from their earthy home could cost you up to $1,000 in fines.
It shall be unlawful for any person in this state to willfully and negligently cut, dig up, trim, pick, or remove, any plant, flower, shrub, bush, fruit or other vegetation growing upon the right of way of any public highway within this state. -Title 18, Idaho Legislature
Imagine being out with your kids, teaching them about Mother Nature's beautiful bounty, when suddenly you find yourself on the wrong side of the law. Yikes!
That bunch of innocent flowers your six-year-old tried with all their heart to fashion into a bouquet could potentially put either you. Sounds crazy, right? But on the other hand, Idaho's Wildflower Code of Ethics prevents over-picking and unlicensed street flower vendors from making a buck off of Idaho's endangered wildflower population.
