The stats are heartbreaking.

In 2021, a CDC study found 21.3% of Idaho high schoolers had seriously considered suicide within the past year. Even more devastating, the study points out 19.7% of students had made a plan with 10.9% having actually attempted it. Of the attempts, 3.4% led to critical injuries.

What's happening to our teens, Idaho?

Did you know Idaho teens are 22% more likely than the national average to contemplate suicide and 25% more likely to follow through with it?

In 2023, ID Ed News noted the state's youth suicide rates had jumped from 8 to 10.7 per 100,000 kids ages 10 to 17 between 2016 and 2021.

What’s happening to Idaho teens?

Sadly, untreated depression plays a huge role. One Boise School District survey in 2023 showed that 30% of our junior high and 44% of our high school students suffered from severe depressive symptoms, while 29% of junior high and 34% of high school students had thought about ending their lives in the last six months.

Is it our need for more mental healthcare providers and resources, Covid's after effects, or social media stress? If we had to guess, we'd say those elements are just the tip of the spear.

Let’s talk to our teens, Idaho.

Talking helps! It's up to us to ask our teens about their struggles and share what we can of ours. Being honest and open with Idaho adolescents can help eliminate the stigma associated with asking about help and sharing their problems. Talking may not solve everything, but it can help our teens feel more understood and less alone. And that's a step in the right direction.
