There’s Nothing More Annoying Than Idaho Drivers Who Do This
Idaho drivers have a habit of changing lanes mid-intersection.
It's crazy and reckless, but it's also legal, give or take a few conditions. If you think that's crazy, it gets crazier, friend. Did you know there's not a single Idaho law tethered to the daredevil maneuver?
Law Stuff Explained says it's one of those gray areas/gaps in Idaho's driving code locals take advantage of. Surprisingly, there are only two state road rules that obliquely reference intersection etiquette.
Drivers to exercise due care. Notwithstanding other provisions of this title or the provisions of any local ordinance, every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with [...] a human-powered vehicle and shall give an audible signal when necessary. -49-615
The other rule, statute 49-637, frowns upon careless lane changes and points out a driver's obligation to clear their blindspot, nothing more. Doesn't that strike you as odd?
You can still get ticketed for changing lanes in Idaho intersections.
Not so fast, Jeff Gordon. If you're changing lanes like you're auditioning for NASCAR, Idaho law enforcement can cite you with a hefty moving violation. We don't blame them.
Changing lanes in the middle of an intersection can seriously disrupt traffic, upping the chance for an accident to unfold. So, even though it's legal, we're not ones to zig-zag our way through an intersection.
