Idahoans know car accidents are a part of life in the PNW.

Unfortunately, no matter how experienced we are behind the wheel or how cautiously we drive, many of us will probably experience a fender-bender or worse in our lifetime.

On country roads and surface streets in towns and cities, car crashes happen for all kinds of reasons in Idaho. More often than not, the Idaho Department of Transportation pegs wildlife, speeding, inattentiveness, exhaustion, and chaotic weather as the biggest culprits behind Gem State traffic accidents.

This past winter alone, I witnessed over a dozen wrecks on my ride back and forth between Star and downtown Boise. T-bones, cars wrapped around light poles, trucks flipped over in ditches down Chinden Blvd/US 26...I vividly remember the shocking sight of a West Ada school bus on its side pointed southbound on McDermott Road 😳

Even the best drivers among us make mistakes behind the wheel.

This is hardly a criticism. I rear-ended a Boise driver on Cole and Emerald about nine months ago.

Stopped at the red, I had reached into the backseat for my sunglasses when my foot slipped off the break and punched the gas, rear-ending the Honda SUV in front of me. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and both of us were insured.

Still, it was a big wake-up call for me. I was too proud and too embarrassed to admit it at the time, but I was tired and had already put in over 60 hours at work when it happened.

The 15 Idaho counties in the gallery below have more car wrecks than any others in our state. Whether you're on a backcountry road trip up to McCall or dealing with the insane traffic in Boise's Treasure Valley, watch your back and drive safe, friend.
