I Support All Breastfeeding Mamas of the Treasure Valley
August is National Breastfeeding Month, and as a mother who once breastfed, it is heartening to see this is a thing. Whether breastfeeding came easily to you or was a struggle (I landed somewhere in the middle), it can feel a lot of times like you're the only one who gets what it's like to feel like a big ol' leaky cow. It's been beautiful seeing all the moms sharing their experiences, anecdotes, and advice on social media. More specifically, seeing moms and others band together to fight against the stigma of public breastfeeding.
I know this is a heated topic for a lot of people. I've never understood why, but I do understand the stress and anxiety it puts on moms just trying to feed their child. Breasts have been so sexualized in this country that people get outraged if a breast is out in public even if it's literally performing its biological function of feeding a baby. To be colloquial, it really sucks. I promise these moms aren't trying to seduce or offend anyone. Babies want to eat when they want to eat and I strongly feel like we should support the alimentation of living beings who can't nourish themselves without help from their mothers. So, to all the breastfeeding mamas of the Treasure Valley, I support you and if I ever witness someone giving you a hard time I WILL stand up for you.
But most of all I just support moms. Whichever way is best to nourish your child, go for it. With my first kid I couldn't breastfeed. My body just wasn't doing it. So formula it was, and that was perfectly fine. With my second I breastfed until I tried up and then switched to formula. That was cool too. Some moms just don't want to breastfeed. Also fine and dandy. Let's just not shame moms. And specifically during National Breastfeeding Month, let's show a little extra love for the ones who breastfeed. K? Thanks!
