Does Idaho Have The Worst BBQ In The Country? New Reports Hint At It!
Americans love BBQ. A new YouGov poll found that 51% of Americans say they eat a lot of barbecue. Here in Idaho, we're no different.
In fact, Idaho is the third largest dairy producing state in the nation. So, with all of these cattle, certainly we have some of the best BBQ in the country, right? Not according to a new report.
YouGov set out to discover once and for all where the best country is, because everybody claims they have it. Is it Texas? Tennessee? The Carolinas? Everyone claims the title but only one can hold the trophy.
Even once you find the state, every city will claim they have the best. Let's say you think Texas has the best BBQ. Do you go to Dallas? Austin? Houston?
Same thing with Tennessee. You've got Memphis and Nashville who do their cooking a little differently. Then, over in Missouri, you've got Kansas City and the city of St. Louis who does their BBQ differently than the others.
Let's be honest here, though. I've never had bad BBQ. Even "bad" BBQ is still pretty great. So, even the states who didn't make this list still can do our favorite BBQ foods right.
However, according to YouGov, here are the 20 states who do BBQ best.

Noticeably missing from this list was Idaho. Sort of a head scratcher. You would think with all of our cattle and livestock we'd be high on the list of best BBQ. I mean it's not like we don't have amazing BBQ joints to hit up!
We have Drummin Up BBQ up in Coeur d'Alene and Goodwood and the Rib Shack down in Boise. They have stellar offerings that BBQ fans from all over the country would enjoy. However, it wasn't good enough to crack the Top 20.
I would have thought Idaho would make it, especially with surrounding states like Wyoming and California making the list. They aren't known for their BBQ. At least not any more than Idaho would be. I suspect foul play!
In addition to the best states for BBQ. YouGov also ranked the specific cities associated with having the best BBQ in the country. This is where I found even more surprises than the previous list and rankings. Sure, Texas has the best BBQ in the country. I don't think any BBQ fan will fight you on that. However, which city has the reputation for doing it best? Prepare to be shocked.
Here are the rankings for cities in America most associated with having the best BBQ.
- Dallas, TX
- Austin, TX
- Memphis, TN
- Houston, TX
- Kansas City, KS
- Nashville, TN
- Kansas City, MO
- St. Louis, MO
- Louisville, KY
- Atlanta, GA
- Charleston, SC
Now you see why Texas easily took home the best BBQ in the country prize. Every city does it right! Missouri has a lot going on, too. Surprising to see it not be higher on the list of states associated with the best BBQ.
The poll didn't stop there! Let's keep talking BBQ. They also polled to see what Americans favorite style of BBQ was. Here's how those results turned out.
- Ribs (29%)
- Pulled Pork (19%)
- Beef (8%)
- Burnt Ends (5%)
- Sliced Pork (2%)
- Smoked Turkey (2%)
- Sausage (2%)
Can't fight these results, either. Ribs are absolutely the best. Are the considering "Beef" to be brisket? Or all encompassing? Either way, I won't fight it. Love me some brisket.
Don't think Idaho was worthy of making the list of best BBQ in the country? Check out this list and reconsider.
