For a lot of us, the idea of smoking indoors seems outdated. After all, who hasn't heard about the dangers of secondhand?

Yet, despite all this, several Idaho establishments still allow people to light up indoors. This might seem surprising or even immoral to some, but there are good reasons why smoking indoors is still allowed in certain Idaho establishments.

Whether you like it or not, smoking is legal.

Smokers have rights...period. As of 2024, there are no smoking restrictions for Idaho bars.

And at a time when acceptance and individuality are trendier than ever, shouldn't we stop ostracizing the smoking community? As society becomes more and more health-conscious, a 2017 Gallup poll shows smokers often find themselves marginalized, judged, and restricted.

For many, smoking isn't just a habit, it's a way of life. By allowing Idahoans to smoke indoors, establishments are acknowledging that smokers still need places where they can hang out, let loose, and be themselves.

The Benefits of Smoking Indoors

Idaho winters are known for being bitter cold! Being able to smoke indoors provides a welcome respite from our chilly winter months. When you think about it, people who smoke often view it as a way to relieve stress and anxiety. Forcing paying customers to stand outside in the cold probably has the opposite effect.

It's true that research from the Centers for Disease Control across nine states shows smoking bans don't tank revenue for bars and restaurants. But, by allowing smoking indoors, establishments are catering to a growing niche market by providing a unique, judgement-free experience that attracts loyal customers.

Addressing Secondhand Smoke

It's worth noting that many Idaho establishments that allow smoking take measures to reduce exposure to non-smokers.

These measures include designated smoking areas, air filtration systems, strategically placed fans, or higher-quality ventilation systems. By taking these precautions, establishments can ensure that smokers can still indulge in their habit while reducing a non-smoker's exposure to secondhand smoke.
