Looking For Fun Mom Friends? You Need Treasure Valley MomTok

It took about three minutes for me to be completely obsessed with Hulu's new reality show, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. The show follows a group of Mormon mom-fluencers in Salt Lake City as they try to navigate their group, MomTok through a swinging sex scandal, prengancy out of wedlock, domestic viloence, and an internal power struggle for control of the narritive and friend group. And that's just episode one! Who wouldn't be sucked in, right?

The show makes you think about how you would handle the amazing amount of adversity in your career. Because of the popularity of their TikTok accounts, these moms are the breadwinners in their families, which is not usually the case in most traditional LDS homes in Utah, Idaho, or anywhere else. Keeping their lifestyles as they've established them requires a certain level of finesse within these friendships.

The show presents these moms as much more than the traditional housewives. If you have a stereotypical view of what a Mormon mom looks and acts like, this show will shatter it. Depending on your viewpoint, that will be heartbreaking, refreshing, or eye-opening, but your view will never be the same. Some of them are divorced, some cuss, and some even drink. When cameras follow you around this much, you eventually show who you are, and these women definitely do.

Watching the show got me wondering if anyone has started a similar group of moms in the Treasure Valley. I was expecting to find a long-established group, considering how strong our ties seem to be to Salt Lake City and our large Mormon population. I was surprised to learn there isn't a MomTok in Boise, or at least not yet.

Enter Katie (@katiemarie1009 on TikTok), who is starting a Treasure Valley version of MomTok. She was a fan of the original MomTok and watched the scandal and all the drama happen in real-time on TikTok. The show provided more insight into how everything happened and helped her get to know each of the MomTok moms better.

Seeing moms come together inspired Katie to start the Treasure Valley version of MomTok. "I want to have a group of girls who support one another.  I have never had a lot of mom friends just simply because we're all busy moms."

When I asked her how her group would differ from the one in The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, Katie said, "I definitely am aiming for a drama-free group. I don't want any moms feeling left out or judged for going out, being themselves, or opening a beer when they're having a rough night.  I want a group that isn't focused on CONTENT, either.   I've seen the other groups focusing more on creating content together, and I realize some moms just don't have time for that."

All 40 original spots were taken in the first 24 hours, but the bar is open to the public, and there will be plenty of other moms to meet and hang out with.
