Undoubtedly, for the last several years, Idaho has seen an influx of people continue to move here. They move here for different reasons, whether it's the affordability or the job opportunities. COVID-19 highlighted the feasibility of remote work for many different industries. New Mexico finds itself at the bottom of the list at #50, with one of the highest crime rates and one of the highest percentages of the population living in poverty.

Utah is ranked the 15th best place to live, with one of the lowest percentages of the population living in poverty, just after New Hampshire. Utah also has the lowest average of weekly hours worked. Utah was in the top 10 for affordability and education & health.

In order to determine the best and worst states to live in, WalletHub compared the 50 states across five key dimensions: 1) Affordability, 2) Economy, 3) Education & Health, 4) Quality of Life, and 5) Safety.

We evaluated those dimensions using 51 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most favorable living conditions. For metrics marked with an asterisk (*), the square root of the population was used to calculate the population size in order to avoid overcompensating for minor differences across states.
