The '90s: you just had to be there

Walking down memory lane the other day, I couldn't stop myself from chuckling and cringing at my old photo albums from the '90s. Every snapshot seemed to capture an adult mid-puff, living their best nicotine-obsessed lives.

Uncles, aunts, family friends—you name it, they were all there, smoking out Mom's kitchen like a Cypress Hill concert. From communion parties to barbeques and birthdays, no picture was without an ashtray and a smoky haze. But those were the '90s in all their glory, y'all.

Back then, smoking indoors, around kids, even in the waiting rooms at the doctor's office was normal. Smoke-filled rooms were a part of life.

In Idaho, is it still legal to smoke with kids in the car?

Nope! Flash forward to 2024, and somehow it's still legal for Idahoans to smoke in cars with kids. Something I hadn't realized it until a young mom in a smoke-filled Ford Fusion with three bitties buckled in the back passed me on 84 a few years ago.

Now, I'm not here to point fingers or judge smokers, they're grown adults whose choices are their own to make. That said, seeing little ones subjected to their habit breaks my heart. As someone who grew up in a "smoking household" where people were inclined to smoke indoors, I know firsthand what it means to grow up in a cloud of smoke.

By now, most of us understand secondhand smoke is more than a nuisance. It's damaging and especially dangerous for growing lungs.

From respiratory problems to more severe health issues like cancer, no good comes from exposing Idaho children to cigarette smoke. Hopefully, Idaho gets on board with the idea that every child deserves to breathe fresh, smokeless air at home and on the road.
