It's not a Comic Con, but it's close!

Sure, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back two of the most anticipated female-focused superhero movies of all time and caused production delays on the Disney+ series that Marvel teased us with in 2019...but 2020 wan't a total loss for every fandom!

Star Wars lovers got a new season of The Mandalorian that revealed "Baby Yoda's" real name, made our jaws drop with a cameo no one saw coming and announced that another Star Wars original series (The Book of Boba Fett) was in development. DC fans got to unwrap Wonder Woman: 1984 on Christmas Day. Superhero lovers in general got a second season of some of the darker and more adult streaming series like Prime Video's The Boys and Netflix's The Umbrella Academy. And Marvel fans? Well, we got a lot of free time to re-watch the entire Infinity Saga to have it fresh in our minds when Phase 4 finally arrived in the form of WandaVision in January.

The pandemic gave us a lot of time to reconnect with all the things that we love to nerd out about and on Saturday, we finally get to celebrate those fandoms at the Summer Cosplay Gathering happening at Kleiner Park in Meridian this weekend!

If you're not familiar with the concept of cosplay, it's simply the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, series or video game...you know, sometime other than Halloween. Gem State Comic Con, the organization putting the meet-up together, has arranged for some cosplay groups like the 501st Legion (Star Wars bad guys,) Rebel Legion (Star Wars good guys,) and Magic Valley Knights (many genres) to be there, but invites the community to put on their own costumes and join in the fun!

Listen to Michelle Heart mornings on 107.9 LITE-FM and download the FREE LITE-FM app.

Dressing up is not a requirement. If you've got a kiddo who loves superheroes, storm troopers or fairytale characters bring them to check it out! There's nothing that cosplayers love more than giving kids the opportunity to "meet" their idols and pose for pictures. The first 100 kids who stop by will also receive a FREE Disney comic book!

The Summer Cosplay Gathering happens near the Kleiner Park amphitheater from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There's also a photo booth and cosplay contest that are part of the event! Learn more about it on Facebook.
