Boise has an obsession with creepy dolls.

There's something about hideous and malicious-looking dolls that leaves people fascinated and horrified.

It’s a strange, dichotomy, isn't it? We’re drawn to these demonic-looking dolls, yet so many of us are terrified to sleep alone in the same room as them. In case you missed it, this phenomenon's been on full display in Boise’s Facebook marketplace.

Year after year, we continue to come across locals peddling dolls that look like they crawled out of the Seventh Circle of Hell. And locals buy them.

Are they searching for a demonic doll to call their own? Maybe they're hoping it'll move and spring to life like the disturbing dolls in the clip below.

Why are Boiseans drawn to eerie-looking dolls?

Maybe it's because they tap into our primal fears. Dolls are meant to look like us, but when they’re slightly off, it can be unsettling.

It's an uncanny valley effect that can trigger a fight or flight response in our brains, causing us to feel uneasy or even scared. Unfamiliar with the uncanny valley? Here's a quick recap to catch you up to speed:

The uncanny valley is a theory in aesthetics suggesting a humanoid object appearing almost, but not exactly, like a real human can evoke feelings of eeriness or revulsion, rather than familiarity, due to the object's proximity to reality yet noticeable imperfections. -Simply Psychology

Harrison Boulevard on Halloween is to Boise what evil and possessed dolls are to occult enthusiasts. Both are enchanted by the idea of dark spirits who roam the earth, seeking the ruin of man.

Why would someone want to own a creepy doll?

Perhaps it’s because they see them as a kind of novelty item, something odd and unique to add to their collection. Or maybe they’re drawn to the thrill of owning something that has the uncontrollable power to scare them.

Whatever the reason, it’s clear that creepy dolls have a strange hold on Boise locals.
