Do You Know Why Amazon Prime Day is in July?

Until this morning, we didn't. Here's what we found out!

According to About Amazon, Amazon's premier publication, Prime Day "came to life" on Jul. 15, 2015 to celebrate the mega-retailer and online web service provider's 20th anniversary. It also kicks off an early back-to-school and college shopping period.

The first "holiday" lasted 24 hours and was only available in nine countries: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, and Japan.

Today, Prime Day is a 48-hour event with 20 countries partaking in the world's biggest online sale! Last year, Amazon Prime members bought over 300 million items and product worldwide. In all, members "saved over $1.7 billion," making the 2022 Prime Day event the biggest one on record.

Not even a decade later, it's become one of the most popular sales events of the year.

...even while facing challenges like pandemic-related supply chain issues between 2020 and 2021, and, more recently, changes in shopping habits due to inflation, Amazon continues to scale Prime Day to record-breaking heights — the sale brought in over $12 billion in 2022, according to estimates from Digital Commerce 360, compared to less than $1 billion when it first began.
