Mosquito Magnet? They Like Some People More Than Others

If you feel like mosquitoes love you, there may be a scientific reason behind it.

And how can you encourage them to leave you alone?

The science behind the mosquito love has to do with body odor, pH, and bacteria on your body.  Kinda gross, but basically the article at Salon.com says body odor and sweat can alert mosquitoes to our presence because of several short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids that come along with it.  Smelling clean isn’t quite as attractive to mosquitoes ironically.

Bug spray with DEET is supposed to keep them away.  Along with other methods like lemon eucalyptus oil, cinnamon, citronella, and thyme.   Those are irritating to mosquitoes.

Who knew!  It looks like we’ll be grilling with lots of thyme this summer, and packing the cinnamon on the camping trip.
