Remember a few months ago, when I scammed a call center representative, who was claiming to help me fight against a possible lean from the IRS. This is the call which I recorded.  Last week an India call center was raided..  I'd like to think in some small way, I helped to make these arrests at the call center.

Police in India have raided call centers in Mumbai and arrested over 70 people and are questioning hundreds more after uncovering a massive scam to cheat thousands of Americans out of millions of dollars by posing as U.S. tax lawyers.

The way it worked was a large group of people attempted to scam Americans by running fake call centers telling Americans to call back because they owed back taxes.

Those who called back, were then encouraged to give money to fight the IRS against any leans they may file  The scam allegedly brought in more than $150,000 a day…..which means hundreds of millions of dollars were scammed from US citizens.

The criminal charges filed against the suspects include extortion, impersonation and violations of India’s information technology laws.

Indian media reports said 70 percent of the scam’s proceeds went to suspects in India, while the rest was paid to collaborators located in the United States

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, NEVER EVER give out personal information.  The IRS will NEVER call you to ask for money.  You will only be contacted by mail.

If you do get a call you suspect of being a scam, you can do like I did and screw with them or you can report the call to the IRS using their “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page.
