The Leftovers certainly made do with an HBO series that outgrew its original novel, so might Big Little Lies do the same? The star-studded miniseries has many fans hoping for a follow-up, and original author Liane Moriarty says she’s actively developing a potential continuation with the network.

You’re warned of full spoilers for Big Little Lies from here on out, but the Shailene Woodley-Reese Witherspoon-Nicole Kidman-Zoe Kravitz series, for the most part, followed Moriarty’s Australia-set novel, which concluded with a major death that tied together all the different stories. Season 2 might seem like a stretch, though the author tells the Sydney Morning Herald that a potential second season could delve into the backstory for Kravitz’s Bonnie, which was largely absent from the HBO version:

I have started to think about ways this could continue. The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn’t write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we’ll see what happens.

I’m absolutely open to it because, once I started thinking, it was too much fun to see what I could do and to see these characters again. And there’s definitely places you can go. The obvious thing is, first of all, I think we could bring in more of Bonnie’s story from the book.

And also what happens next [for Celeste]. That’s the question that’s also a really interesting thing, when you’ve been through a relationship like that, how do you feel now? How would she feel? She’s grieving. She’s still grieving for the end of a terrible relationship and I think that would be a really interesting thing to explore. So there’s a whole lot of different storylines.

For the most part, Moriarty deferred to the willing cast and screenwriter David E. Kelley, though director Jean-Marc Vallee expressly told The Hollywood Reporter he thought the Big Little Lies story should be “a one-time deal.”

In the meantime, you can watch all seven Big Little Lies episodes on HBO, check out the series below, and stay tuned for news of a potential second season.
