As you're meandering through the clothing store, do you notice if the mannequin is making eye contact with you?  I do!  Just try to escape that gaze.  It's impossible.

Mannequin eye contact is one way stores get us to spend more money.  We see that friendly face and it puts us in a trance, and the next thing we know we're buying the shirt right off her back.

What are other creative ways stores use to get us to fork over the dough?

Yahoo News says the red print on sale signs is meant to get us excited about sales, because red is a color that sparks emotion.

Stores also use good smells to entice us.  Who can walk past that cinnamon store without buying a thousand calorie breakfast bun?  And stores will use nostalgic music to remind us of good times back in the day, and when we get happy we buy more stuff.

Heads up for the holiday shopping season!  Look at the floor and plug your nose and ears if you want to stick to a budget it appears.

Oh, and if you really want to stick to a budget, go shopping ALONE.  When we go shopping with other people we tend to enjoy ourselves too much, and all the laughter and fun makes us loose with the dollars.  If we're alone, we'll talk ourselves out of things.  Darn that BFF.  And the mannequins too.
