Obviously I am not the only one who's ever been confused by those McDonald's McFlurry spoons. Is it a spoon or is it a straw?? Every single time I try to sip the spoon as if it is a straw. McDonald's is well aware of this confusion and they are owning up to this silliness.

Plan on taking advantage of a free McFlurry from McDonald's on May 4th as way of them saying "sorry for the confusion." Everyone can receive a free regular sized Caramel Brownie McFlurry via the McDonald's app with no purchase necessary.

"While we can't change the iconic hollow spoon (a key piece of the mixing process), we can help ease the sting of your facepalm upon figuring out how to use it," the company wrote in a statement.

McDonald's further explained to Food & Wine that the spoon's signature square hollow design actually serves a functional purpose by allowing them to be able to to attach it to the McFlurry machine and mix all ingredients up before it doubles as a utensil.

"The McFlurry spoon was invented by an employee at one of McDonald's suppliers, Flurry International, in 1995," the company said. "Since then, the McFlurry spoon design has been an iconic part of the dessert's experience!"

If you're wondering like I always have, why McDonald's just doesn't open up the other end and actually make it into a cool hybrid spoon-straw, well there's a reason for that too. "We think our creamy McFlurry is best enjoyed with a spoon. Some of the McFlurry toppings are too large and might pose a safety risk with a straw."

Okay that's fair. I suppose the free McFlurry is too.
