To get from Portage, Alaska to Whittier, Alaska you must travel on the longest railroad-highway tunnel in North America. I drove 2.5 miles through a mountain on a railroad track!

To get from Portage on the Turnagain Arm of Alaska, to Whittier on Prince William Sound, you have to go through a mountain. A tunnel was dug for the railroad from 1941-1943. Instead of building a second tunnel for cars, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is used for both. It was a true Alaskan Experience!
