Election season is at its tipping point in Idaho, and that means a few things:

  • A metric ton of political signs that won't be cleaned up after the election
  • People screaming at each other on Twitter
  • Political attack ads

It's that third one we're getting fed up with.

It's the worst. You sit down to watch your favorite show (In this writer's case, Jeopardy! because I like to feel smart) and the first commercial break comes on. The volume somehow jumps from normal to beyond extreme and you hear:

(CANDIDATE NAME) CAN'T BE TRUSTED. THEY VOTED THREE TIMES TO RAISE TAXES, THEY LOVE PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA, AND THEY EVEN ATE BABIES BACK IN COLLEGE. So this political season, vote for (other candidate), they don't eat babies.

Or something like that. You know what we mean.

It's so bad. My wife and I have come to the point where we mute the TV the second it jumps to commercials, no matter what's on. All the negativity, hate-flinging, and overall negativity is just a terrible vibe for trying to relax on the couch with your family while watching TV.

Here's my idea: No attack ads. Candidates are only allowed to air ads for themselves, and third parties, PACS, CPACS, CPAPS, whatever, aren't allowed to air negative ads about candidates.

Hell, I should run for office. Look at these exceptional policies I'm already getting behind. Just make sure you vote for me, and not that other writer, because THEY WANT YOUR HOME TAKEN AWAY AND IN THEIR MID-TO-LATE 20s THEY WENT THROUGH A TOLL BOOTH WITHOUT PAYING.
