You’ might have heard Kate and I talking about 3D printers recently.   This past weekend at the Kids Expo the Discovery Center there was a 3D printer on display so I took a tour.  I bet you didn’t know that any of us can use a 3D printer right now here in Boise for free.

All you need is a library card.  That's right, the main branch of the library, at 715 S. Capitol Blvd., has two 3-D printers. The public may drop in, no charge, and make items with the machines from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays.  The library calls it "3-D Thursdays."

These 3D printers use digital files to fabricate three-dimensional objects. A range of materials are available already, including metal, but the Boise Public Library provides only biodegradable plastic for use.

The library purchased two 3D printers and the laptops and plastic spools to print out 3D pieces for a little over $5000.  The money came from the Friends of the Public Library.

If you’re nervous about trying a 3D printer, a librarian is available in the room to help users with their projects.

But 3D printing is pretty popular already at the library. Last year the library had patrons sign up for printing time slots. There was so much interest that they created waiting lists.  Now the printers are available on a drop-in basis and printing slots are limited to two hours, although arrangements can be made for longer projects.
