St. Luke’s Weight Loss Challenge — Sticking with It OR I’d Rather Lick My Driveway than Eat Another Chicken Breast

In this day of instant mashed potatoes, microwave popcorn and next day delivery, I have to say that my attention span is probably comparable to that of a 3 year-old — so about 4 minutes if it’s REALLY engaging.  It’s even worse when you combine it with the fact that I’m also a big fan of instant gratification — I have a Kindle because I don’t want to have to wait for Amazon to deliver my purchases in 3 to 5 business days.

Changing my mindset to making this a complete lifestyle makeover was “amazing” when we started in January…it moved to “great” 4 weeks ago… and now it’s ”Seriously? How many ways can I cook boneless, skinless chicken breasts?”  Which is to say that the weight loss blush is officially off the rose.

In the past, I’ve been satisfied with being on a diet for 10 days, I’d lose a couple of pounds, get bored with plain chicken breast, salads with a squeeze of lemon juice and then I’d start back doing the things that made me gain weight in the first place. Hello Emotional Eating — did you miss me?  Ahhh — there you are my cheese and bread companions.  Oh — and two glasses of wine with dinner — my old friend, it’s been just too long.  And then, not so suddenly, I’m back to Square One.

Right now, I’m at the point where the weight loss has slowed down, the changes aren’t as dramatic and if I’m not really careful I’ll slip back into those unhealthy habits because those are my comfort zones.  And like I said, this is where my hard work begins. I have to make those conscious decisions every… single… day. Not eat a pick me up sugary snack at 3pm. I will choose to drink water or herbal tea at night instead of a glass of cabernet. I will choose to put more vegetables on my plate. I am choosing to eat more fresh, whole foods instead of processed, boxed foods.

It will be harder, but the good health I have now and in the future will be worth it.   My being able to run, jump and join in will be worth it.  And — last, but not least — my “skinny-er jeans” will be worth it.
