OPP: Charging Our Son Rent. Is that right?

Dear Mike & Nicole.

I love the show, and have heard about Other People's Problems. Well I think mine falls in line with it and I'm needing some advice.

My son left the nest to attend college last year. He did well academically and seemed to be very well adjusted to college life. In light of that my husband and I agreed that it was time to renovate my son’s room into a media center/home theater. My husband likes to call it his man cave. Anyway my son decided not to go back to school and is now living back at home. We have had to relinquish our new media room back to his bedroom. My husband is NOT happy to give up his man cave and the money we are out on renovations, and I am disappointed that our son has left school. My husband wants to charge him $300.00 a month. I think that that is too much and I don’t feel that he should have to pay us anything as this is his home as well. He says he is trying to teach him a life lesson but I am worried that our son will no longer feel welcome in his family home. Is it wrong for us to charge our son rent??
