My husband and I wanted to do something cool with our oldest son before our youngest was born last April. We thought it would be fun to learn a language as a family. It would be neat to learn together and something we could share with his little brother as he got older. After discussing different language options, my son suggested sign language. I had read some articles about the benefits of teaching babies sign language, as a form of communication that would help lessen frustration tantrums, and it sounded like a perfect idea!

We started with a few basics. Mommy, Daddy, Brother, Milk, Diaper, Please, and Thank You. I read that if you start before 6 months old, that by 12 months they should start being able to sign. Right after our sons first birthday, he started signing back to us and telling us what he wanted instead of whining or crying. It was amazing! Now at 15 months, I still get excited when I see him sign. Check out his signing of "milk" at bedtime.

We plan to continue learning more together as a family and I just found a place right here in Boise called ASL Expressions!
