I grew up on a farm and we raised cattle, hogs, wheat, peas, barley and hay. Could Idaho be adding another HUGE crop that may some day rival our potato farms? If this story is any indication I would say yes.

Where have I been? I had no idea a huge solar farm has been under construction this year in south Boise. I'm talking a solar farm of almost 400 acres able to put out enough energy (40 Mega-watts) to power around 30,000 homes.

From early morning till the sun sets at night, about 180,000 solar panels quietly rotate following the sun doing nothing more than generating electricity.  The project is called Solar 1 and it’s located on South Cloverdale Road.

This is the first commercial solar farm to be built in Idaho but it won’t be the last or the largest. Construction is underway on the 600-acre, 80-megawatt Grand View PV Solar Two project in Elmore County, which will help generate enough electricity to power around 60,000 homes.

Who knows, soon, if this keeps up, Idaho will be known more for their solar farms than their potato farms
