The work rescue groups do for animals is unbelievable to me. They selflessly spend their time and energy rescuing animals and sometimes rehabilitating them before they are healthy enough to find forever homes. That’s what is happening right here in the Treasure Valley.

Meet Leroy. He’s a two-year-old dog with a spinal deformity that affects his back legs. Leroy was rescued from the streets of Caldwell. Volunteers at Boise Bully Breed Rescue believe he may have been trapped in a small space for a long period of time, which caused permanent spinal injury causing paralysis in his hind legs.

Brittany Smith, a resident director at Boise State who also works for Boise Bully Breed, rallied a group of engineering students to help build a special wheelchair out of donated baby strollers and other parts. The group included: Madisyn Benge, Zach Taylor, Steven Saldivar, Sarah Knue and Kane Venecia.

He is still getting used to his new wheels, but he is able to move around better, chasing balls, and playing more. Vanecia says this was a chance to get some hands-on experience outside of the classroom. But mostly, it was a chance to help Leroy. The students didn’t receive any extra credit for the project, just the chance to do something good for a sweet and affectionate dog in need.

If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting Leroy, contact Alicia with Boise Bully Breed at 407-782-2999.
